Weaponization
How the MAGA GOP uses tax-payer resources to undermine humanity
To "weaponize" means to manipulate commonly held resources into acting as a tool or a weapon to attack, undermine, or gain leverage over others. Instead of fair political competition, a political manipulator uses coercion, guilt, or emotional leverage to get others in the public to do their dirty work.
In a rather shrewd and cynical way, the Trump White House and the MAGA movement have both charged democracy with weaponizing against their authoritarian causes, while weaponizing resources used to maintain democratic fairness against the foundations of democracy itself.
Read the official White House statement:
“The American people have witnessed the previous administration engage in a systematic campaign against its perceived political opponents, weaponizing the legal force of numerous Federal law enforcement agencies and the Intelligence Community against those perceived political opponents in the form of investigations, prosecutions, civil enforcement actions, and other related actions. These actions appear oriented more toward inflicting political pain than toward pursuing actual justice or legitimate governmental objectives. Many of these activities appear to be inconsistent with the Constitution and/or the laws of the United States, including those activities directed at parents protesting at school board meetings, Americans who spoke out against the previous administration’s actions, and other Americans who were simply exercising constitutionally protected rights.”
Meanwhile, Trump is using federal resources to attack who he sees as personal enemies. what he is doing is clearly inconsistent with the Constitution, common morality and personal decency.
The most prominent individuals targeted include:
Joe Biden (in relation to his son's dealings and government records), Hillary Clinton (for her emails and foundation), and Barack Obama, Former FBI Director James Comey (over congressional testimony and intelligence leaks) and former CIA Director John Brennan, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell (over interest rate and monetary policies) and Fed Board Member Lisa Cook (over scrutinized personal finances),New York Attorney General Letitia James and Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis, and Trump accuser E. Jean Carroll and former National Security Advisor John Bolton (over the publication of his memoir). The list continues down to the most common citizens and innocent immigrants.
Isn’t this the very definition of weaponization? I asked AI. Here is what I got:
Donald Trump is weaponizing democratic institutions by eroding the political independence of the Department of Justice (DOJ), purging the professional civil service, and using federal funds and tax enforcement to reward allies and punish political adversaries. His administration and its supporters counter that these moves are not a weaponization of government, but rather a valid exercise of executive power to dismantle a biased bureaucracy, secure borders, and enforce the mandate of the voters.
The primary methods through which critics state democratic structures are being altered include:
Politicization of the Department of Justice
Retaliatory Investigations: The DOJ is reportedly directing criminal inquiries against former critics, including grand jury indictments of past federal officials and targeted special prosecutor reviews of opposing lawmakers. [1, 2, 3]
Sidestepping Precedent: The administration has openly challenged post-Watergate norms that insulate law enforcement decisions from a president's personal political interests. [1]
Mass Attorney Resignations: More than 100 career prosecutors have resigned from the DOJ, citing intense political interference and pressure to dismiss charges against presidential allies. [1]
Restructuring the Civil Service and Oversight
Systemic Purges: The administration has used mass firings to remove federal employees, inspectors general, and independent oversight board members who act as internal checks on executive actions. [1]
Flooding with Loyalists: By lifting caps on political appointments, bypassing typical Senate confirmations, and waiving background checks, the administration has placed unvetted political appointees in sensitive government positions.
Elimination of Agency Programs: Executive orders have systematically dissolved internal non-partisan workforce initiatives and diversity departments, shifting agencies toward strict political alignment.
Financial and Regulatory Retaliation Against Civil Society
Targeting Nonprofits and Universities: The administration has directed the IRS and federal agencies to threaten the tax-exempt status or pull funding from higher education institutions and climate organizations that challenge its policies.
Punishing Law Firms: Regulatory and financial pressure has been leveled against private law firms that represent political opponents or engage in litigation against the administration's actions.
The "Anti-Weaponization" Settlement Fund
Taxpayer Payouts: A $1.776 billion DOJ fund was established to compensate individuals who claim they were politically targeted by previous administrations.
Rewarding Supporters: Legal analysts and lawmakers point out that the fund could offer cash payouts to individuals convicted during the January 6 Capitol riots, who also received wide-ranging presidential pardons.
The use of the term “weaponization” by the Republican Party locally and nationally is truly Orwellian. Read more here: https://www.citizensforethics.org/reports-investigations/crew-reports/how-president-trump-is-dismantling-our-democracy-one-piece-at-a-time/
This is not just politics. This is dehumanizing power.
